How to Make a Box Mold - Page 3B

  • Page 3B: Overview of Materials, cont'd
#2 Which material do you want to cast into the mold and how many casts you need?
There are many different casting materials with very different properties. Some molding compounds have better longevity when casting cement, and some are more suited to take the heat of hot wax, low temperature metal (pewter) or multiple casts of exothermic resins*. You will want to investigate the properties of each material to find which will be best for your specific project. In addition to the considering caustic features of certain casting compounds, you should calculate the number of copies you want to generate. For any given project there is an appropriate combination.
