Hands-On Mold Making Workshop |
 |
Announcing a new type of mold making workshop at The Compleat Sculptor! Finally, a class where you don't have to give up an entire weekend to learn how to make molds. This hands-on mold making course runs for 6 weeks (meeting on Wednesday evenings), which allows for students to learn how to make their very own molds in a creative environment while having a professional mold-maker on hand, and a resource for all the materials
you'll need right up the stairs! While all students will have similar end-goals, the paths they choose to get there may vary depending on the original model that they either bring, or create, to be molded. Students will be in touch with Rita prior to the class start date to go over any
issues that may compromise the ease of mold making, and to discuss any potential for additional costs, materials, time, etc. |
| All students should have already taken the resin-rubber overview which is a lecture discussing major differences in the mold making industry. This course is essential as it provides the basic information needed before starting any mold making project. |

The following schedule should only be used as a guideline. Every student
is encouraged to work at their own pace as some models may take longer to
be molded than others. Some models may require simple one-shot-pour molds,
while others may require multiple-piece mother molds and rubber to be
brushed on in layers. The following schedule is applicable for those making
two-piece, brush-on molds. If your model requires a simpler mold and may
not take as long, there will be a discounted short-session package
available for your purchase AFTER you've confirmed details with the
instructor. Please email Rita directly with images of your model for an
immediate consultaion. |
- Week 1: Prepping your model (attaching to bases, sealing/releasing,
creating partition walls if needed, etc) and planning the mold. In some
cases we may be able to apply first layer of rubber on the first day
- Weeks 2-4: Applying multiple layers or rubber (if needed) and pouring rubber into mold halves.
- Week 5: Finishing mother molds and preparing for de-mold. In some cases, molds may already be de-molded by this time, in which case we can start discussing casting options, faux-finishing techniques, etc.
- Week 6: De-mold and casting of one plater original.
