In this workshop, students will create a wall-piece around a mirror, featuring a flaming phoenix rising up from the ashes. Emphasis will be on composition, color blending, and incorporating bead and stone embellishments into the polymer clay sculpture work.

The class will detail how to cover a mirror properly, and how to add hook or other options for hanging. The mirror will feature a graduated look with the bottom of the sculpture having an ashy look, typical of the phoenix’s mythical rise from the ashes. This will be accomplished with both sculpting techniques as well as incorporating beads and other materials into the clay. In the phoenix portion of the sculpture, the emphasis is on creating a fiery look using clay techniques as well as surface treatments.

Handouts will be provided for the student to keep, covering all the steps in the process. This workshop is open to all skill levels and students will finish the project during class. Click here for materials list. All materials will be available for purchase at The Compleat Sculptor.

About the Instructor: Christi Friesen was born at a very young age, kidnapped and raised by lemmings. She escaped to California where she got married, had various wonderful kids, and amassed credit card bills. She is currently considering having a midlife crisis, unless there’s something good on television.
