Pourable Polyurethane Mold Compounds

Polyurethanes...are flexible mold compounds that are extremely easy to handle. They have simple mixing ratios and good fluidity, and can be used for pouring practically any type of casting material with the right release agent. They are also cost-effective, but have certain sensitivities that affect them negatively---short shelf life in pre-mixed form and an aversion to water. Most are available in pourable and brushable versions. All materials below are arranged in terms of increasing hardness. Each includes both Parts A & B, which, when combined, approximate the total volume and weight listed.

PMC 724

Mixes and pours easily, curing to a durable elastomer with a low shrinkage rate. 724’s low viscosity ensures flawless pick-up of even the finest details with minimal bubble entrapment. Also by using the optional part D, you can thicken it to a paste-like consistency for vertical surface brush-on applications. In contrast, addition of the optional Part C will yield a softer rubber. This rubber has a particularly short mold life.

Used by artists and industry the world over for a variety of design, casting and special effects applications, PMC 724 is by far the most versatile liquid rubber compound available on the market today. It is inexpensive, mixes and pours easily, and will cure to a durable rubber with negligible shrinkage. Low viscosity ensures flawless pick-up of even the finest detail with minimal bubble entrapment.

PMC 724 PUTS YOU IN CONTROL! Using optional ‘Part D’, you can thicken PMC 724 to a paste-like consistency for vertical surface brush-on applications or for getting into those hard-to-reach undercuts. If you like to work with a more flexible rubber, optional ‘Part C’ is available to soften PMC 724 all the way down to a Shore A6. Typical applications include reproducing sculpture (lost wax process), creating special effects, making fiberglass panel & part molds, on-site architectural restoration and new construction molds. A variety of colors and special effects can be achieved by adding pigments, and for added project dimension, you can foam PMC 724.

Important: This rubber will last and perform in production, often for hundreds of castings (depending on what you are casting into the mold). It also exhibits good physical properties and chemical resistance. But PMC 724 does not have a long “library life”. Molds will soften and revert to a liquid within 2 – 5 years, depending on exposure to moisture. Smooth-On makes many different mold rubbers that offer a very long library life (25 years and more depending on application).

Poly 74-30

A very versatile rubber. Widely used by foundries for wax and plaster casts, it can be poured as supplied, or thickened (with cabosil) and brushed on. It has a long working time and is very fluid, making it good for surrounding undercuts and fine detail. Excellent for limited castings of resin or cement. This product is also available with a softener: Part C.

Poly 74 Series rubbers consist of liquid Part A and Part B that, after mixing, cure at room temperature to flexible, high-strength, RTV mold rubbers. Poly 74 Series rubbers make durable, easy releasing molds for casting gypsum plasters, and waxes without release agents, but are also excellent for casting cement, epoxy, polyester, urethane and acrylic with proper release agents.

These products are safe to use if directions are followed. At room temperature, Part A is a clear liquid with a viscosity of 5000 cps and specific gravity of 1.02. Part Bs have specific gravities of 1.00. The Part B's of the Poly 74 series rubbers require stirring or shaking before use. Part B often darkens with age, but rubber properties do not change.

Poly 74-40

This is similar to 74-30, but it’s increased strength makes it possible to use smaller mother molds. The 2:1 mix ratio is easily measured. 74-40 can be used on a variety of models with success. (Good for casting cement and /or resins.) This product is also available with a softener: Part C.

Clear Flex 50

A perfectly clear flexible material that does not need to be vacuum cast. The super-low viscosity allows easy bubble release. This rubber is actually being used more as a casting material than a mold material, but when used for molds, offers the convenience of being able to see through it for easy cutting. Unfortunately, either a heated post-cure or a week at room temperature is required, so time becomes an issue.

Clear Flex 50 is water white clear urethane liquid rubber compounds designed for applications that require absolute clarity and resistance to sunlight. Low viscosity ensures easy mixing and pouring. Clear Flex 50 cures at room temperature with negligible shrinkage. Cured castings are clear, flexible and UV Resistant. Vibrant colors and color effects are achieved by adding pigments. Applications include making clear-cut molds, model reproductions, decorative cast pieces, special effects, prototype parts.

Poly 75-60

This is a firm semi-translucent urethane, widely used for concrete form liners and plaster molds. It is fast-setting, so de-molding can take place after a few hours. It also has significant strength, allowing it to be stretched for various casting applications. 75-60 may stain some casting materials.

Poly 75 Series rubbers consist of liquid Part A and Part B which after mixing, cure at room temperature to economical, flexible mold rubbers. These products may be considered for casting plasters, cements and waxes. Resins may also be cast with proper release agents. The Poly 75 Series has been formulated for good economy with high performance.

PMC 870

PMC 870 is a Shore 70A addition to the line of industrial liquid rubber products (such as PMC 780 and PMC 790) used for a variety of industrial and casting applications. Mixed two parts A to one part B by weight, PMC 870 pour easily and cures at room temperature to a solid Shore 70A rubber that has exceptional performance characteristics and dimensional stability.

It is suitable for production casting of abrasive materials such as concrete (pre-cast concrete, making concrete stamping pads, etc.) and gypsum plasters with high exotherms. It is also suitable for rubber mechanical parts of varying configurations (gaskets, wheels, pulleys) as well as ball mill liners and vibration / shock pads.

Poly 81-90

The firmest of rubbers at 90A, this material is effective for molding or casting. TCS recommends it be used for molding, only with the simplest of pieces (no undercutting). Durable positives can be made with this elastomer.

These products are very hard with excellent abrasion and moisture resistance in cured form. They are used for making a variety of hard rubber parts, forms, tools, rollers, etc. where the best wear and highest performance is expected from a hard liquid rubber. Poly 81-90 is a very firmer rubber with a Shore A-90 hardness. Poly 81-D45 and Poly 81-D55 are even harder systems that have only very slight flexibility and a feel that borders on that of a plastic.

Poly 81 Series Rubbers consist of liquid Part A and Part B which after mixing, cure at room temperature to tough, durable, polyurethane type rubbers of different hardnesses. They offer moisture insensitivity, long working time, low viscosity for easy vacuuming, good flow and low prices for this type of rubber.
